Two related activities with different outcomes
AI Governance readiness assessment and ISO/IEC 42001 certification can support the same broader goal—more accountable AI management—but they are different services.
| AICS readiness assessment | ISO/IEC 42001 certification | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Review a defined scope of practices and evidence; identify strengths, gaps, and priorities. | Determine whether an AI management system meets the applicable requirements of ISO/IEC 42001. |
| Who performs it | AICS conducts an independent readiness review under an agreed engagement scope. | An external certification body conducts the certification audit and decision process. |
| Outcome | Evidence-backed findings and practical next steps for the agreed scope. | A certification decision by the certification body, based on its audit process. |
| What it means | A view of readiness and areas to address; it is not a certification decision. | Independent confirmation from the certification body that its certification criteria are met. |
ISO describes ISO/IEC 42001 as a management-system standard for organizations that provide or use AI systems. Organizations may choose certification when they want independent confirmation from a certification body. Learn more from ISO's explanation of ISO/IEC 42001.
Where a readiness review can help
Before contacting a certification body, an organization may want a clear picture of its scope, ownership, documented processes, evidence, and open risks. A readiness review can help teams:
- Define the AI activities and organizational boundaries they want to review.
- Gather existing policies, roles, risk records, lifecycle processes, monitoring, and improvement evidence.
- Identify where documentation is missing, stale, or not connected to an accountable owner.
- Prioritize work and prepare questions for an external certification body.
A practical sequence
- Set scope. Identify the AI management activities, business units, systems, and locations relevant to the organization.
- Review current evidence. Map existing processes and records to the agreed readiness criteria; note what is supported and what remains uncertain.
- Address priorities. Assign owners and dates to the improvements that matter most to the organization.
- Choose a certification route. If certification is a business objective, select and engage an appropriate external certification body to explain its process, scope, and requirements.
AICS can help organizations assess readiness and prepare evidence for a future ISO/IEC 42001 certification process. The certification audit and decision remain with the external certification body.
